The tales of two pernicious pugs and their doormat.

Cold...so very cold...

Today is Babar's last checkup at the vet - from this day forward, he's no longer a puppy. He's an adult pug. Well, at least that's what my vet wants me to believe, so I can spend another $300 on the adult plan this year, since he already convinced me to spend $200 on the puppy plan last year. So the poor pug was bundled up, tossed in the car, and handed over to the vet's receptionist. During it all, he was wagging his tail like it was motor-powered, and licking everyone in sight. Poor pup - doesn't know what's in store for him. Now I've returned home to a empty apartment...so dark...so QUIET. I'm lonely. Although I may oftentimes wish my pug was 100 miles away, especially when he gets into one of his moods and wants to chew my fingers to the bone, and then munch those down his throat.... but when he's gone, I miss the little bastard. Why? I don't know. Perhaps I'm a sadomasochist. Or mebbe I just love that darn dog too much for my own good. He's also a great entertainer. He's got such an expressive face, so even the slightest little movement says volumes - I laugh myself silly sometimes. Lately he's taken to acting even more like a spoiled child - he's realized that he can tug on my pants or dress to get my attention, and the little monster does it ALL THE FRACKING TIME. I look at him and I see his little brain spouting, "Mommy?! Mommy?! MOMMY!? Attention!! Give me attention! I am the center of this universe!! Attention!! Attention!!" He's also developed his own little form of language - he rarely barks, and almost never at me, but he will go from grumbling, to whining, to short little yips, depending on what he wants. It's almost endearing, but not quite because it annoys the hell out of me. Unless he's doing it to someone else. Then I just laugh my pants off. Oh, well. Enough of this pug talk - I've got work to do, and I'd better get to it. Ciao!

*laugh* I know that yip thing. Wrinkles can't bark loud. She never learned a puppy, so now it's a high-pitched 'arf!' that signifies she wants attention, down, up, wawa (water), food, Scoobies, Alpo (she gets it once a day), the tv off...

Does he cock his head to the side and look like you've lost your mind often? She does it when listening, too.

Yep, he does that too. Just not to me very often - he's used to my voice. However, when he hears something especially loud, or a strange noise, he does the head cocking thing too. And oftentimes when you pick him up and talk to him, his little wrinkles quiver and he looks like he's raising an eyebrow questioningly at what you're saying. Hilarious. :)

Awww, his puppy days are at an end. Sometimes I miss those days, but not usually! Cassie's very calm and simply a lap dog most of the time now.

Drew,

Of course he does it with you - you're a stranger. You're never around. :) And you make strange sounds. :)

Tam,
I WISH my pug was a lapdog. I doubt he'll be one even when he's 15 years old. He's never been one that likes to be held or enjoys sitting on my lap for long periods - he absolutely needs to be close, but as long as he can keep an eye on me, he prefers to snuggle up to his blankie and fall asleep with it in his mouth. And here I bought a pug because they were supposed to be lap dogs. Hopefully I have better luck with my next pug. :)

See, Wrinkles has always done the headcock, like "WTF?" or the intense listening. It was more funny to watch her do it at the TV. But then she's...special. His wrinkles quiver? Aw! I've never seen that. I swear the dog knows whatever we say and can spell. Really, really well. Just selectively. Does he love his jowls rubbed when sleepy?

Babs really doesn't like being touched much when he's in a sleepy mood - he prefers to sulk off, bite his blankie, and fall asleep. He needs his blankie at ALL times. The thing is a shredded remnant of what used to be a bed, and he drags it everywhere he goes. Stinky old thing.

It's okay darlin', we ALL feel that way. Our pets are family, and to me (childless on purpose) she's my baby that I get to spoil rotten, love adoringly and still leave at home for 3 days with some litter, water and food. :)

Babar will be okay, but he'll be tweaked at you at first. A few doggie treats and he'll get over it. Hang in there!!!

See, Wrinkles will lean into your hand, or if the hand's not available, bumps your arm until you start petting her. She'll fall asleep like that. She used to have a critter (a little orange caveman thing that Petsmart used to carry) that went everywhere with her. Then she got old, and decided it was easier to just avoid a toy.

cinnkitty,

Turns out the receptionist had failed to mention this appointment was not the last of his puppy plan - it was actually the first of his adult plan. And she called me five hours after dropping the pug off to inform me that when I came pick him up, I would need to pay $200+ dollars for that plan. I said hell no, and instead went and picked up the pug before he could get checked. Poor guy - sitting in a cage all by himself all day long. :(

Jessie,
Yeah, the pug just doesn't have the must-have-petting instinct. He definitely wants your full attention, though, and he will climb all over you and sit on your lap and bit your nose and do whatever it takes to get it. He does like having his belly rubbed, though. Especially by my bf. He adores my bf - probably because he's the one that buys him the weekly chicken. Boo - damn hypocrite.

Well, duh. The quickest way to the pug's heart is through the stomach. Men, schmen. It's all about pugs. Men should be so lucky being compared. ;)
